Surface composition of anhydrous silicates

Abstract

The surface compositions of a number of silicates containing calcium, magnesium and aluminium have been determined. Where calcium is present, it is always depleted at the surface. Silicon is nearly always enriched at the surface, as is magnesium when this is present, but there is competition between the two. Possible mechanisms for the observed enrichments and depletions are discussed.
