Method for the investigation of melting processes: analysis of penetration experiments

Abstract

La- and Ca-modified BaTiO3–Ba6Ti17O40 eutectics have been examined in a heating microscope. Using video equipment the heights of the eutectic powder-tips on BaTiO3 substrates were measured and analysed. The corresponding plots of heights vs. heating time allow the objective estimation of the onset temperatures of melting processes and the detection of additional liquid phases. Preliminary findings obtained with this method are presented.
