Study of the Ru–Mo–O and Ru–W–O phase systems; rutile solid solutions Ru1–xMxO2

Abstract

The phase diagrams of the Ru–Mo–O system at 900 °C and the Ru–W–O system at 1100 ° C have been determined by a combination of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and electron microscopy. The only mixed metal oxides found in either system were the rutile solid solutions Ru1–xMxO2> with 0.5>x>0 for M = Mo and 0.13>x>0 for M = W. The composition dependence of the unit-cell parameters of the solid solution is consistent with the calculated band structure of rutile. The alloy Ru1–xWx, was found to form in the composition range 0.35>x>0.
