Analytical viewpoint. Start with SPC and save, save, save!

Abstract

Many analytical laboratories use hundreds of analytical methods to produce thousands and, in some cases, millions of results per annum. This paper discusses the need to train both laboratory managers and analysts in SPC (statistical process control) so that its use in analytical laboratories, for studying the analytical methods, is both feasible and possible. Training of all laboratory personnel leads to considerable benefits from the consequent study and monitoring of analytical processes. This paper gives several examples of occasions where the earlier use of SPC could have prevented difficulties arising and where the use of SPC has helped to resolve both long- and short-term problems. The paper has resulted from work carried out within the laboratories at ICI on Teesside and emphasizes the many benefits of using SPC and allied statistical techniques within analytical laboratories.
