Liquid–vapour coexistence properties of isomerizing n-butane

Abstract

The equation of state for a binary gaseous chemical system in terms of pressure, density and temperature only, in the van der Waals approximation, is first obtained. The appropriate thermodynamic potential which allows for the application of Maxwell's equal-areas theorem is obtained. The results of numerical calculations of the vapour pressure, the composition of both phases and the heat of vaporization are presented as functions of the temperature for the particular case of the isomerization of n-butane.
