Infrared investigation of the surface species obtained by chemisorption of acetylene (ethyne), C2H2 and C2D2, on high-area zinc oxide
Abstract
Infrared spectra from the adsorption of C2H2 and C2D2 on ZnO have been obtained between 4000 and 600 cm–1. The spectra are interpreted in terms of the presence of dissociatively adsorbed surface complexes (H—CC–)Zn2+(OH–)(species l) and non-dissociatively chemisorbed ones (species II) of the type of a substituted ethene bonded to surface zinc ions, possibly (Z)-ZnHCCHZn. A previous ambiguity in the structural assignment of species I has been resolved.
