Protonation at hydrido ligands in [WH4(PMePh2)4]

Abstract

Kinetic studies on the reaction between [WH4(PMePh2)4] and anhydrous HCl in tetrahydrofuran show that the formation of [WH5(PMePh2)4]+ occurs by two pathways, one involving direct protonation at the metal and the other involving initial attack at a hydrido ligand to generate [WH32-H2)(PMePh2)4]+ which subsequently rearranges to give the pentahydride.
