The compound [Cs(18-crown-6)][TcNCl4] is prepared and is shown to consist of an ‘infinite sandwich’ Cs+ cation/crown ether configuration and two types of polymeric [TcNCl4]– anions, with distinct Tc![[triple bond, length half m-dash]](https://www.rsc.org/images/entities/char_e007.gif)
N distances of 1.56(3) and 1.693(5)Å, and TcN ⋯ Tc separations of 4.275(4)Å.
