Kinetic-spectrophotometric determination of trace amounts of vanadium(V)
Abstract
A simple and sensitive kinetic-spectrophotometric method is described for the determination of vanadium(V). The method is based on the vanadium(V)-catalysed oxidation of 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid dihydrochloride (DABA) by potassium bromate. The reaction was followed spectrophotometrically by measuring the rate of change in absorbance with time at 480 nm. The proposed method allowed the determination of vanadium(V) in the range 3.06â50.94 ng mlâ1 with good precision and accuracy. The selectivity of the method with respect to the possible interference of many species was investigated. The method was found to be relatively selective and was applied successfully to the determination of vanadium in tap water and steel samples.
