Modification of mordenite zeolites by chemisorption of disilane and its influence on the adsorption properties. Part 2.—An adsorption study

Abstract

A study has been made of the effect of structural modification by chemisorption of disilane on the adsorption properties of small- and large-port H-mordenite. The changes of the pore size, adsorption capacity and affinity are related to the concentration of the modifying groups and to the number of the new [triple bond splayed left]Si—O—Si[triple bond splayed right] bonds formed along the channels of the zeolite. These changes can be controlled by the conditions of the chemisorption of disilane and the pretreatments. The pore size narrowing effect is enhanced by hydrolysis and dehydration of the disilanated mordenites. However, the most effective pore size reduction of the modified zeolites is obtained by chemisorption of disilane at higher reaction temperatures. The characteristics of the modifying groups chemisorbed in the zeolites have been studied by adsorption and F.t.i.r. measurements.
