Modification of mordenite zeolites by chemisorption of disilane and its influence on the adsorption properties. Part 1.—A modification parameter study

Abstract

The processes of structural modification by chemisorption of disilane on large- and small-port deammoniated H-mordenite have been investigated. Depending upon the reaction conditions the modifying reagent can be chemisorbed with the zeolites in two different ways: (i) a homogeneous implantation on the internal and external surface, (ii) a preferential reaction with the hydroxyl groups at the pore entrances resulting in an external structural modification. The [triple bond splayed left]Si—Si[triple bond splayed right] bonds in the disilane molecules show relatively low reactivity compared with the [triple bond splayed left]Si—H bonds, and a fraction of the [triple bond splayed left]Si—Si[triple bond splayed right] bonds can be broken after chemisorption and hydrolysis treatment. After hydrolysis and dehydration the disilanated zeolites show an inert character to further chemisorption of disilane.
