Determination of osmium(VIII) in aqueous solution by d.c. argon plasma atomic emission spectrometry: interference studies

Abstract

The linear dynamic range, detection limits and precision of the determination of OsVIII in 0.2 M NaOH or 2.0% HCl solutions by d.c. argon plasma atomic emission spectrometry were studied at four emission lines of osmium. The interference and matrix effects of HCl and HNO3 and of cations Na, K, Mg, Ca, Al, CrVI, FeIII, CoII, NiII, CuII, ZnII, MoVI CdII, RuIII, RhIII, PdII, AgI, IrIII, PtIV and AuIII on the determination were investigated at the 225.585- and 290.906-nm emission lines. The linear range covered concentrations from 0.15 to 25 µg ml of OsVIII. The detection limits were about 0.027 µg ml–1 in 0.2 M NaOH and 0.030 µg ml–1 in 2% HCl solutions, calculated from measurements of the blank.
