Spontaneous ignition and thermal runaway in closed and open systems. Part 2.—Ignition and extinction in the adiabatic continuous-flow well stirred reactor (c.s.t.r.) for reactions of order m

Abstract

Criteria are presented for the prediction of the critical ignition and extinction conditions for reactions of order m in an adiabatic continuous-flow well stirred reactor (c.s.t.r.). Both temperatures and dimensionless variables are exploited: results are presented in the from of analytical expressions and a graphical method. The stability of the stationary states in the adiabatic c.s.t.r. is discussed. Finally the effects of dilution and changing composition (in the case of a bimolecular reaction) on the conditions for criticality are studied.
