Enthalpy of formation of tetramethylgermane

Abstract

The enthalpy of formation of highly purified tetramethylgermane has been determined by combustion in oxygen at 25 atm pressure in a bomb calorimeter, followed by full quantitative analysis of the products. The enthalpy of formation at 25 °C for Ge(CH3)4 liquid is –131.1 ± 8.3 kJ mol–1 and for the gas –102.6 ± 8.3 kJ mol–1. The mean dissociation energy of the Ge–C bond is 264.2 kJ mol–1.
