Reaction between bis(benzyl)tetraisopropoxyditungsten(W[triple bond, length half m-dash]W) and but-2-yne: W2(CH2Ph)2(OPri)42-C2Me2)2 and W2(H)(OPri)4(µ-CPh)(µ-C4Me4). A terminal metal hydride with a 1H n.m.r. resonance 20 p.p.m. downfield of Me4Si

Abstract

1,2-W2(CH2Ph)2(OPri)4(W[triple bond, length half m-dash]W) reacts in hydrocarbon solvents at ambient temperatures with MeC[triple bond, length half m-dash]CMe to give initially (η2-C2Me2)(PhCH2)(PriO)W(µ-OPri)2W(OPri)(CH2Ph)(η2-C2Me2), which has a puckered central W2(µ-OR)2 core, W–W 2.67 Å, and eliminates one equivalent of toluene with the formation of the novel compound W2(H)(OPri)4(µ-C4Me4)-(µ-CPh) upon heating to +60 °C.
