β-Hydroxydithioesters (5) are obtained via treatment of mixtures of methyl dithioacetate and the appropriate carbonyl compound with sodium hydride in tetrahydrofuran αβ-Unsaturated dithioesters (1) can be prepared from (5) by way of suitable elimination reactions. Cycloadducts are formed by the reaction of (1)with a number of dienophiles and one diene.
