Pair correlation functions from the linearized Poisson–Boltzmann equation with axial symmetry in aqueous 1–1 electrolytes
Abstract
The pair correlation functions in 1–1 electrolyte solutions are obtained from the charge distributions around two ions. These are calculated by use of the linearized Poisson–Boltzmann equation with two ions, which is solved numerically by use of a finite-element method. The values of g+–(r) and g++(r) or g––(r) calculated differ from those obtained from the B.B.G.Y. hierarchy or integral equations. On the other hand osmotic coefficients, taking into account various assumptions concerning the sizes of the ion and values of the dielectric constant, agree qualitatively with those obtained in real solutions.
