Simultaneous multi-element determination by inductively coupled plasma-rapid scanning atomic-emission spectrometry

Abstract

The development of a rapid scanning spectrometer as a multi-element detector has been recently reported. In this instrument the introduction of an oscillating mirror in the optical path of a monochromator facilitated rapid scanning of a pre-selected spectral region (up to 60 nm) across the exit slit. This paper describes the results obtained when the spectrometer was coupled to an inductively coupled plasma for simultaneous multi-element determination by atomic-emission spectrometry. Detection limits are in the low-p.p.b. and sub-p.p.b. ranges and linear dynamic ranges are at least four orders of magnitude. Spinach digests were analysed for Mn and Fe and the determined values correlated well with values obtained on a polychromator system. Mn, Fe and Cu were quantified in NBS SRM bovine liver and the results compared well with the certified values.
