Volumetric and dielectric properties of benzene solutions of some tri-n-alkylammonium halides at 298.15 K

Abstract

The densities of benzene solutions of tri-n-alkylammonium bromides and tri-n-alkylammonium iodides up to 0.100 mol kg–1 and the electric permittivities at 2 MHz of benzene solutions of tri-n-alkylammonium chlorides, bromides and iodides up to X2= 0.005 (ca. 0.065 mol kg–1) in a homologous series from the tri-n-propylammonium to the tri-n-dodecylammonium salt have been measured at 298.15 K. The molar polarizations of the solutions and the partial molar polarizations, partial molar volumes and dipole moments of the solutes have been calculated. From the dipole moments of the solutes at infinite dilution the interionic distances in the ion pairs, the total electrostatic interaction energies and the interaction energies due to the mutual polarizations of ions in ion pairs have been calculated; the results are discussed on the basis of self-aggregation processes of solute molecules.
