Heat of adsorption of carbon monoxide on zinc oxide pretreated by various methods

Abstract

The heat of adsorption of carbon monoxide on zinc oxide has been measured at room temperature on samples of different origins that had undergone various different pretreatment routines, by means of a Calvet microcalorimeter.

Samples of preoxidized ZnO obtained by ignition of Zn (Kadox 25) and decomposition of zinc carbonate have the same energy of interaction with CO (44 kJ mol–1), although the adsorptive capacity of Kadox ZnO is markedly higher than that of the ZnO obtained from the carbonate.

Upon outgassing in vacuo or reduction in air both the adsorption capacity and the interaction energy decrease dramatically.
