Theory of electrokinetic phenomena

Abstract

A complete hydrodynamic theory of electrokinetic phenomena in porous media and gels is presented. The treatment is based on the frictional formalism and is compared with the more familiar thermodynamic approach. The phenomenological coefficients in the flow equations of non-equilibrium thermodynamics are expressed in terms of the molar friction coefficients, and the Onsager reciprocal relations are deduced from Newton's third law. A proof of the Saxén relations is also given.
