Structure and dynamics of graphite intercalation compounds. Part 3.—Crystal dynamics and binding in C8K, C8KH and C8KD by inelastic neutron scattering

Abstract

Neutron inelastic scattering from C8K, C8KH and C8KD has been measured with the objective of determining the vibrational spectrum for the hydrogen and hence the site symmetry. A model for the site symmetry consistent with the observed spectra is proposed and this is related to the diffraction measurements made on powder and partially oriented specimens.

The phonon dispersion curves for C8K at room temperatures have been obtained and give a measure of the change in stiffness between carbon sheets as a result of intercalation.
