The reaction of nido-B9H12– with trans-[Ir(CO)Cl(PMe3)2] yields several new compounds, among which is the pale yellow arachno-1-metallapentaborane [1,1,1-(CO)(PMe3)2(1-IrB4H9)]. This compound bears the same relation to arachno-B5H11 as nido-[1,1,1-(CO)3(1-FeB4H8)] bears to nido-B5H9. The fluxionality of the compound and its 1H, 11B, and 31P n.m.r. spectra are described.
