The cyanide ion is shown to be an excellent ligand for stabilising the fluxional η1-dppm complexes, trans-[M(CN)2(η1-dppm)2](M = Pt or Pd, dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2), which can be used as key intermediated in the systematic synthesis of heterobimetallic (µ-dppm) complexes with silver, mercury, or rhodium.
