Triplet–triplet absorption spectra of some benzenoid hydrocarbons in the vapour phase

Abstract

An apparatus capable of measuring triplet–triplet absorption spectra in the 200–300 nm region for molecules with triplet lifetimes in the 1 ms–100 ns region is described. Spectra obtained for some fluoro-, methyl- and trifluoromethyl-substituted benzenes in the vapour phase are assigned using CNDO/S calculations. Comparison is made with predictions from other calculations.
