Phase transitions of lipid monolayers and bilayers

Abstract

The viscoelasticity of glycerol mono-oleate monolayers and of bimolecular membranes of glycerol mono-oleate with cholesterol has been investigated by laser light scattering. Data on the surface pressure and membrane viscosity of these systems reflect phase transitions occurring in the membranes. The properties of fully condensed monolayers are related to those of bilayers of glycerol mono-oleate.
