Partial molar volumes of organic compounds in water. Part 8.—Benzene derivatives
Abstract
Partial molar volumes of benzene and a number of its derivatives in water at 25 °C are reported and the contribution of the substituent groups to the partial molar volumes calculated. Results indicate larger volumes for groups substituting an aromatic ring than those replacing an aliphatic hydrogen. Excess volumes for benzene and some of its derivatives are determined and volumes of proton ionization for aniline and its N-methyl derivatives, as well as those for benzoic and 2-phenylacetic acids are evaluated.
