Formaldehyde as a hydrogen-donor to aldehydes and ketones in metal-catalysed reactions in water

Abstract

Formaldehyde reacts with other aldehydes (RCHO)(or ketones) in water in the presence of [Rh2(C5Me5)2(OH)3]Cl to give mainly RCH2OH; the reaction is substantially accelerated by alkali.
