The 1H n.m.r spectrum of 5-phenyl-l-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-2-one reveals W-coupling between only one of the C(9) protons and the equatorial protons on C(6) and C(8), from which it is concluded that the lactam ring has the boat conformation.
