Optical activity of rare earth crystals. Europium oxydiacetate
Abstract
The circular dichroism (c.d.) spectra corresponding to 7F0→5D1.2 and 7F1→5D0,1,2 transitions of the europium oxydiacetate crystal are reported. The electric dipole and magnetic dipole contributions to the total transition moment are separated for the principally magnetic dipole allowed 7F0→5D1 transition as well as for the principally electric dipole allowed 7F0→5D2 transition. C.d. spectroscopy is shown to be a particularly sensitive technique for observing 7F1→5D1, 5D2 transitions. A calculation correlating c.d. spectra and structure, the first of its kind for lanthanide complexes, is attempted with the Judd–Ofelt model as basis.
