Quadrupole moment and magnetic anisotropy of carbon disulphide

Abstract

The infinite-dilution molar field-gradient birefringence constant for carbon disulphide as a solute in carbon tetrachloride at 298 K and 632.8 nm is reported. From an analysis of the measurements the molecular quadrupole moment, Θ, of carbon disulphide is found to be (+ 14.2 ± 1.1)× 10–40 C m2, a result which is of interest in relation to the charge distribution in this molecule. The quadrupole moment so deduced is combined with the known value of the rotational g-tensor to yield the magnetic anisotropy, Δχ, of carbon disulphide as (–18.6 ± 0.3)× 10–5 J T–2 mol–1.
