Microscopic reversibility prevents a non-traditional interpretation of non-linear Hammett plots

Abstract

In a series of reactions which proceed by an initial equilibrium followed by a rate-determining conversion of an intermediate, the observed substituent dependence is the result only of the substituent effect on the equilibrium and the slow step; other interpretations are shown to be invalid.
