Preparation and characterization of some salts of the difluoro-oxobromine(V) cation

Abstract

Bromosyl fluoride BrOF3 is shown to form 1 : 1 adducts by direct reaction with BF3 and AsF5, and the preparation of the compound BrOF3·SbF5 by an indirect method is described. The Raman and 19F n.m.r. spectra of these adducts are interpreted in terms of the ionic structures [BrF2O][BF4], [BrF2O][AsF6], and [BrF2O][SbF6], although, in the solid phase, the [AsF6] and [SbF6] anions probably bridge strongly to the cation. The [BF4] and [AsF6] salts decompose thermally to the [Br2]+ cation, while the [SbF6] salt appears to give [BrF2]+.
