An alternative route to furanoid and pyranoid glycals

Abstract

The reduction of suitably protected furanosyl and pyranosyl halides with sodium naphthalide in tetrahydrofuran gives furanoid and pyranoid glycals. Furanosyl halides with sodium or potassium in tetrahydrofuran give 3-O-furanosyl furanoid glycals as major products.
