The reactions of 6-amino-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridines with α-halogenocarbonyl compounds yielded 1H-imidazo-[1,2-α]pyrrolo[3,2-e]pyridines with a variety of alkyl and aryl substitutents. These imidazopyrrolopyridines underwent ready electrophilic substitution at the 3-position; when the 3-position was blocked 8-substitution occurred.
