Kinetic spectroscopy in the far vacuum ultraviolet. Part 4.—Oscillator strengths of F(3s2Pj–2p52Pj) and Cl(4s2Dj–3p52Pj) transitions

Abstract

Oscillator strengths, ƒ, for several far u.v. resonance transitions of F and Cl were determined from measurements of light absorption as a function of ground state 2P[fraction three-over-two] atom concentrations in a flow system. The sources of radiation were microwave-excited F and Cl atom lamps emitting non-reversed resonance lines between 95 and 120 nm.

The following ƒ-values were determined (1σ): [graphic omitted]. The practical consequences of the close blending of the 118.875 and 118.877 nm lines for the measurement of stratospheric chlorine atom concentrations are discussed.

Approximate ƒ-values for a number of higher Rydberg states of Cl are reported.
