Electrodialysis in a dispersed system

Abstract

A formalism is built describing the ion transfer in a medium with anion and cation exchange fibres. The actual heterogeneous polycomponent medium is replaced, with the aid of averaging, by a homogeneous one with three interacting phases corresponding to anion and cation exchange fibres and to the bulk solution. A set of nonlinear differential equations describing the average electric fields of those phases is discussed qualitatively and solved numerically. It is shown that the suggested formalism gives a suitable instrument for treating the ion transfer in the situation considered.
