Magneto optical rotatory dispersion studies of simple electrolyte solutions. Part 4.—The calculation of partial molal magnetic rotations and the solvent structure-breaking entropy effects of electrolytes.

Abstract

A method is given for the calculation of partial molal contributions of solute and solvent towards the measured magnetic rotation of concentrated electrolyte solutions. The changes in partial molal magnetic rotation of the solvent in solutions of group I and group II metal halides, simple nitrates and perchlorates, and the corresponding acids, have been correlated with the structure-breaking effects of the hydrated solutes upon the bulk solvent, as indicated by the structure-breaking entropies calculated from a recent compilation of entropy of transfer of ions. The values of partial molal magnetic rotation of solute indicate the major contribution of the anion towards the measured magnetic rotation.
