Particle size of wyoming bentonite and its relation to the cation exchange capacity and the homogeneity of the charge density
Abstract
A correlation exists between the particle size and the cation exchange capacity (c.e.c.) of bentonite clay. Smaller particles have a lower c.e.c. and a more homogenous charge distribution. The presence of iron-oxides, acting as a cementing agent, affects the observation of this phenomenon.
Homogeneously charged bentonite samples can be prepared by fractionation on the basis of particle size.
