Simple halogenonitrosyl anions of iron

Abstract

The complex [N(PPh3)2][Fe(CO)3(NO)] reacts with alkyl halides to afford [N(PPh3)2][FeX2(NO)2](X = Cl, Br, or I) and with halogens to afford [N(PPh3)2][FeX3(NO)](X = Cl or Br) and [N(PPh3)2][FeI2(NO)2]. The relations between the two sets of paramagnetic anions, their reactivity, and their magnetic and e.s.r. spectral properties are discussed.
