Some complexes of platinum, palladium, nickel, and cobalt formed from (2-hydroxyphenyl)diphenylphosphine and (2-hydroxyphenyl)di-t-butylphosphine

Abstract

The new phosphines PPh2(C6,H4,OH-2) and PBut2(C6H4OH-2) are described. With K2[PtCl4] or Na2[PdCl4] PPh2-(C6H4OH)(L) gives impure complexes [MCl2L2](M = Pt or Pd) which readily lose hydrogen chloride to give [M(OC6H4PPh2)2](the palladium complex as a hydrate). With Na[BH4]. cis-[Pt(OC6H4PPh2)2] gives the hydride [PtH(OC6H4PPh2)L], and with methyl-lithium the derivative [PtMe(OC6H4PPh2)L]. With acetic anhydride the platinum hydride gives the acetyl complex [Pt(COMe)(OC6H4PPh2){PPh2(C6H4O2CMe-2)}]. The phosphine PPh2(C6H4OH-2) with [Pd2(2-methylallyl)2(O2CMe)2] gives [Pd(2-methylallyl)(O2CMe)L]. The complexes [M(OC6H4PBut2)2](M = Pt, Pd, Ni, or Co) are readily prepared from PBut2(C6H4OH-2)(L′). The nickel complex is green but changes reversibly to an orange form on heating. The complex [Pd(2-methylallyl)(O2CMe)L′] has also been prepared and on heating gives the volatile and non-fluxional [Pd(2-methylallyl)(OC6H4PBut2)]. Hydrogen-1, 13C, and 31P n.m.r. and i.r. data are given.
