Ethenesulphonyl chloride reacts with a mixture of a tertiary amine and an alcohol by SN2′ attack of the amine to form the positively charged sulphene which then gives a mixture of the ethenesulphonate and 2-trialkyl-ammonioethanesulphonate esters.
