The first synthesis of (±)-boldine (5), by photocyclization of the (±)-bromodiphenol (1) to the (±)-spirodienone (3), followed by rearrangement to (±)-N-ethoxycarbonylnorboldine (4) and reduction with LiAlH4, is reported.
