Withanolides Q and R, two new 23-hydroxy-steroidal lactones

Abstract

Two new steroidal lactones of the withanolide type, isolated from Withania somnifera Dun (Solanaceae), are characterized by the unusual presence of a C-23 hydroxy-group. Withanolide Q (1a) is (22S,23R)-17α,23,27-trihydroxy-1-oxowitha-2,5,24-trienolide and withanolide R (2a) is (22S,23R)-6α,7α-epoxy-5α,23-dihydroxy-1-oxowitha-2,24-dienolide.
