Transfer of excitation energy in rigid solutions containing charge-transfer complexes. Part 1 .—Quenching of fluorescence

Abstract

The mechanism of fluorescence quenching of anthracene, dissolved as a solid solution in polystyrene or poly(methylmethacrylate) doped with chloranil or 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene as acceptor, has been investigated. The possibility of energy transfer to complexes between the polymer and the acceptor and between anthracene and the acceptor has been tested. The principal quenching mechanism involves the excitation energy of unbound anthracene molecules being transferred to the anthracene-acceptor complex.
