Infrared spectra of the molecular complexes of p-benzoquinone with aromatic bases: evidence for localised charge transfer

Abstract

Infrared and polarographic analyses of 1 : 1 molecular complexes of p-benzoquinone with aromatic amines have been carried out. The occurrence of two carbonyl absorption bands in the infrared spectra and the ease of reduction of one of the carbonyl groups at a more negative potential suggested a localised site for the charge transfer complexation with considerable ionic character. An examination of previous infrared work on halogenated p-benzoquinone–NN-dimethylaniline complexes showed that such complexation is of a similar type.
