Thermodynamics of dilute solutions of ethanol (1) in p-xylene (2) from freezing-point and enthalpy of dilution measurements
Abstract
Freezing-point depression measurements obtained using an adiabatic calorimeter are reported for solutions of ethanol in p-xylene (1,4-dimethylbenzene) for mole fractions of ethanol from 0.003 to 0.11. Enthalpies of mixing of the same components are reported at 13.3, 25 and 45°C, permitting the calculation of the ethanol activity coefficient, osmotic coefficient and apparent molar enthalpy relative to infinite dilution. The data are interpreted in terms of an association model similar to that recently used for the system ethanol + cyclohexane.
