Studies on ion association: thermodynamics of formation of monoselenocyanato-complexes of cobalt(II), nickel(II), and cadmium(II)

Abstract

Free-energy and enthalpy changes of formation of monoselenocyanato-complexes of CoII, NiII, and CdII have been determined by potentiometry and calorimetry respectively. The stabilities of the selenocyanato-complexes are slightly lower than the corresponding thiocyanato-complexes. The thermodynamic data suggest that whereas [SCN] ion co-ordinates with Cd2+ through either the N or S atom, [SeCN] does so exclusively through the N atom.
