Stability of palladium(II)–olefin complexes in glacial acetic acid

Abstract

Investigation of the species formed when terminal olefins are added to a solution obtained by dissolving Na2[PdCl4] in glacial acetic acid has shown that only two olefin complexes. Na[Pd2Cl5(olefin)] and [Pd2Cl4(olefin)2], can be detected. The stability constants K1and K2 for the equilibria (i) and (ii) are essentially independent of chain length in the range C5–C9. Na2[Pd2Cl6]+ olefin [graphic omitted] Na[Pd2Cl5(olefin)]+ NaCl (i), Na[Pd2Cl5(olefin)]+ olefin [graphic omitted] Pd2Cl4(olefin)2+ NaCl (ii)
