Preparation of zerovalent di(η-arene)titanium compounds using titanium vapour

Abstract

An apparatus for generation of metal vapours and their reactions with potential ligand precursors are described. Co-condensation of titanium atoms with benzene, toluene, or mesitylene gives the compounds [(H6C6)2Ti], [(MeC6H5)2Ti], and [(mes)2Ti], respectively. Symmetrical sandwich structures are proposed for these compounds on the basis of 1H n.m.r., i.r., mass, and photoelectron spectroscopy.
